Balboa was created in the ballroom on Balboa Island in Southern California and was danced as early as 1915. It is usually danced in very close hold and thanks to tiny steps you can “shuffle” to songs as fast as 300 BPM or more.
The basic step is also in 8-count but it is different compared to Lindy Hop. Balboa nowadays is known as 2 distinct styles – “Pure-Bal” in very close hold (resulting in no turns) and “Bal-Swing” which combines Pure and other swing styles.
In video sample are Mickey Fortanasce & Kelly Arsenault in their improvised dance (composing mostly of Bal-Swing) at Prague Spring Swing Festival 2013. It is not a choreography but a “social dance”, almost everything is led and followed.
